The 69th annual Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA) Convention and Trade Show officially opened in Dallas, bringing together leading voices from across the aviation and avionics industry. As one of the most influential gatherings for avionics professionals, the event focuses heavily on innovation, training, and the future of aircraft electronics.

A major highlight of the opening session was the industry-wide emphasis on technician training. With a growing shortage of qualified avionics technicians, the need for structured certification and skill development has become more critical than ever.

Strengthening the Workforce with CAET Certification

The Aircraft Electronics Association has introduced the Certified Aircraft Electronics Technician (CAET) credential to address this gap. This certification is designed to validate the knowledge and practical capabilities of avionics technicians working with today’s increasingly complex aircraft systems.

The CAET program is a knowledge-based certification for entry-level technicians, requiring candidates to pass an online written exam administered through the Unmanned Safety Institute. Over the past year, the CAET has quickly gained recognition as an industry standard for verifying technical expertise.

According to Mike Adamson, President and CEO of the AEA, the certification helps employers identify technicians who are ready to work independently and handle real-world avionics systems with confidence.

Advancing Skills with CAET-Advanced

The CAET-Advanced certification takes training a step further by requiring technicians to demonstrate hands-on proficiency in addition to written and oral assessments. Covering more than 60 practical tasks across multiple system categories, this level ensures technicians are well-versed in critical areas such as wire harness fabrication and flight management systems.

This advanced certification is especially relevant for professionals working in Part 145 repair stations, apprenticeship programs, or those transitioning from military avionics roles. It aligns with ASTM Level 2 standards, reinforcing its credibility across the industry.

Looking ahead, AEA plans to introduce the CAET-Pro certification in 2027, which will focus on experienced technicians and leadership roles within avionics teams.

Industry Recognition and Leadership

The convention also recognized outstanding contributions within the aviation community. Quint DeGroot, owner of Spencer Avionics, was honored as the 2026 AEA Member of the Year for his long-standing dedication to supporting small aviation businesses.

Additionally, PS Engineering was celebrated for its decades of innovation in aircraft communication and audio systems, reinforcing its role as a pioneer in the avionics space.

Keynote Address by Mike Goulian

This year’s keynote was delivered by aerobatic champion Mike Goulian, who shared insights from his career in air racing and aerobatics. Known for his dynamic performances and aviation expertise, Goulian also operates a Cirrus training and maintenance facility, further bridging the gap between high-performance flying and practical aviation services.

A Hub for Innovation and New Product Launches

The AEA Convention is widely regarded as the premier venue for avionics manufacturers to unveil new technologies and products. Many companies use this platform to introduce innovations to industry professionals before releasing them to the broader market.

With manufacturers, technicians, and industry leaders all in one place, the event continues to shape the future of avionics through collaboration, training, and technological advancement.
